What to Blog on Slow Days

Many times, especially in topical blogs, we depend on some timely stream of news and information to blog about. On a busy day, you should choose selectively about which topic is really interesting to blog about, those that your readers would like to read.

Contrarily, on slower days, there may be nothing to write about for two to three days in a row. This is a problem for those who have to meet a quota. Besides, if you have an existing readership, you always want to do your best so they have something to read about when they check your blog/web feed.

It happens sometimes, and quite often in certain niches. If you are a blogger who monitor news via RSS feeds, probably it is the best time to refine your feed list. Add some more news feed so you have more variation of sources.

Alternatively, you can look for more blogs that cover topics related to your blog. This could not only enrich your coverage but also extend your network, if you choose to participate in the conversation in those blogs too.

Yet, those are not the end of what you could do. Here are just some of others:

1. Read forums and find out common problems.

This is one of my favorites. Visit a forum, be a part of it and participate actively. There are many useful things that could happen from this kind of activity. It is about being helpful and getting people to know you.

On forums, often people are posting repeat problems. If you notice, you will see a pattern. Jot down those ideas. In slow days, you could dig into your notes and immediately find things you can blog about.

2. Post opinion.

A bit of rant never hurt for many blog topics. Maybe you have read an articles in a recent magazine. At other times, you probably have a bold opinion about the books you were reading.

Write personal opinion. If your piece has some value, people will appreciate your contribution and see you as another expert to listen to. Not all people will agree, but at least you have some points to make.

3. Regroup existing content.

Old posts tend to be neglected, even if they are good. It is your job as a blogger to dig those gold out and regroup similar posts into a new post. If those posts are worthy, place a link either at the top or on the side navigation bar.

4. Repurpose content.

Go through your archives. Chances are you have more things to say than six months ago about that particular post. It might be an evergreen post, but you can add to it. Either update the post or write an entirely new post with a link to the old post.

It is not uncommon that you will find more content ideas.

5. Stray from your niche.

I don’t mean you should post about your cat every so often. But, there are certainly stories that are not particularly relevant to your niche but still related in some way.

This type of post is fun to write because it lets your creative juice flowing.

Finally, if you feel you’d better let nothing happen on your blog that day, there is really nothing wrong with it. You probably worked too hard and deserve a day or two away from your blog.
