Recovering from Blogger’s Mistake (A Telegraph Case Study)

Brian Clark has the full story about The Daily Telegraph issue, which gained much coverage from fellow bloggers for the last few days.

It all started when Melissa Whitworth, a journalist at Telegraph was accused of stealing blog content and publish it without attribution to Claire or Media Bistro.

The big thing is because it was done by a newspaper founded in 1855.

Not long after that, the post have been removed but MSN still has a cache version available for those who care to look.

Melissa quickly explained about the situation, saying that was a terrible misunderstanding. She forwarded a copy of the post to her boss because she thought it was funny.

Her boss mistakenly thought it was her latest posting and published it.

We all make mistakes sometime and in this case I personally understand this could happen. Lessons learned, let’s all hope Telegraph fix their editorial process to prevent this from happening again in the future.

Obviously, she doesn’t post to her own blog, but someone do it for her. Maybe there is an editorial process in between. That makes us realize how a blog may not be a true self-reflection of the blogger.

The second point is that in the blogosphere, people notice things incredibly fast. Afterall, it is an almost real-time conversation medium for bloggers.

She apologized, bloggers picked that up too and the dust will settle down faster. That was smart.
