Myth 7: I Don’t Want to Give Away the Store

Well, this myth is quite common especially among new bloggers who are setting up their first business blog. In fact, I frequently find out that people complain about this when they don’t know much about marketing. The 7th myth of business blogging is about the concern of giving away too much that they have nothing else to “sell”.
If you are in information business — i.e. a business providing and selling information to those who need it — or coaching, consulting or professional service, then your blog should not be very far from talking about the topic you are providing or doing.
Building, growing and maintaining a blog require a lot of effort and constantly add new and fresh content to the blog. This is when the concern appears. Bloggers, let’s say that they are also the business owners, tend to think that if they have to deliver content on a continual basis, after some time they are going to give everything they have.
This is simply not true and, should I say, the wrong mindset in marketing your business.
If a business owner can not spend three whole days to talk about her business, then I would say she is in the wrong business. Whether she is not interested and being passionate enough, or she may have to learn and become more knowledgeable to provide a better service.
I don’t mean that you must have a lot to say before you can blog. Nowadays you can choose between blogging — which involves writing — or podcasting. The latter allows you to deliver the same information in a different format, if you so choose, like audio and video.
A good blogger will figure out that what she blog becomes a business asset to her to get leads or simply start the conversation with her market. She might have written everyday for a full year, but instead of running out of ideas to blog, she will find that ideas actually rush into her head from every directions.
This is when creating a blog content strategy is not just important but compulsory.
For instance, you can decide to scour the entire blogosphere to find out related information and news. Quoting others and adding your own twist is very popular approach to regular content, especially if you can influence your readers with your thoughts and add value to the whole conversation.
As time goes, you will discover that blogging augments your marketing, builds your business asset and expand your influence instead of giving away your store. Just that you have to do it right, not jumping in because others do it too.
