Google Teaches Bloggers How to Rank

Nick Wilson of Performancing has posted an interview with Matt Cutts, a senior Google engineer and webmaster relations. The topic is sure of interest to fellow bloggers: how bloggers can rank on Google.
They talked about splogs on Blogger.com, how to rank blogs on Google, and how bloggers can use Google to find and organize information.
About splogs, Google Reader and Google Blog Search, I’ve blogged about them in several other occasions. Particularly interesting is the fact that Matt suggests that all bloggers should sit down and read Google’ webmaster guidelines. Other suggestions include follow the discussions or ask questions at Webmaster World or follow other blogs about search engines.
It comes to no surprise all bloggers need to do are the same things every webmaster should do.
He said not to bother with year/month/day blog URLs, and try to pick smaller niche and build the way out and up. The latter I’ve attempted to do in WordPress Mu but with some bugs.
Controversial posts are sure to build links, but too many controversial posts may undermine your credibility. I think you attract more links with a conversational style, humor, and doing your own research to produce new insights or tidbits of info. In my opinion, just commenting on other blogs isn’t as useful.
Old stuff, really. I think what’s more important is persistence. Many bloggers know those, but the time commitment and work required are two major stumbling blocks that are over their head most of the time.
Nevertheless, the interview refreshes my mind again about how we can focus on a handful things and succeed in the blogosphere.
