A Mid-Year Blog Reflection

Blog GoalsDarren Rowse at Problogger.net has started a new blogging project and invited fellow bloggers to post about their blogging goals. The results will be posted for all to read. Because of recent workload, I have just noticed about this, and decided to participate. Hopefully I can still get in. Anyway, here’s my take.

Obviously blogging has changed since a few years ago. It was used as a personal journal back then. My first introduction to blogging was not impressive. I mean, I used it to jot down ideas quickly on my local home network. In fact, I hated it because of the way it scattered my ideas. I switched to a Wiki.

To make long story short, nowadays blogging — from a business perspective — has been one of the most popular tool to not only publish information, but also as a marketing tool to connect with a target market.

When I started Marketing Loop as a series of blogs, here are my goals:

1. To share and establish myself as an expert
As a marketer, I constantly go out to seek information. Things I’ve read, I often have comments about them. A blog allows me to post my rants, or rebut or expound to a topic that will build my credibility and at the same time establish myself as an expert.

I believe that when I start to share, things will start to flow back.

2. To learn and have fun
While I don’t consider myself as a newbie in the areas I am blogging about, I hope these blogs will function as a learning tool for me and anyone who care to join.

3. To improve my writing
I admit, writing is one of the skills I actually have to improve. I also enjoy being able to express my ideas in different ways creatively.

4. Build traffic and readership organically
I’d like to see more traffic and readership on a regular basis as a direct or indirect result of blogging. In other less competitive niches, I’ve seen significant results just by blogging for a few short months.

Nevertheless, I’ve seen growth month after month. It depends on the blogging activities though. Last month, when I put these blogs “almost” on hiatus for personal reason, traffic dropped a bit. Things became normal after I get involve in the blogs again.

5. Generate revenue
I believe in giving away information for free, but nevertheless at one point I have to make a living. When starting this blog, I dreamed to build assets by writing a lot of content and building highly targeted newsletter subscribers in the hope that I can turn this venture into money.

Playing in these competitive niches is not the easiest way to make money, but because I enjoy learning and sharing my previous experiences, I dive into the journey.

I’ve seen good results for some of these goals, but there are still a lot of room to improve. It is nice to come up with a list of goals so that we can adjust accordingly to move closer to the goals.

Great reflections on the first half of the year. I especially like #3. I feel that great writing is very important to the success of a website adn know that my skills there are low. Do you have any references or writing styles that you prefer?

    Thanks Royston for your comment.

Frankly speaking, I don’t follow any style when writing. I read blogs. Some of them I enjoy very much, but I am not a writer enough to notice what makes them good.

I’ve been thinking about taking a writing course or reading a book or two, but have been too busy to do that.

I think people can’t excel in more than two or three unrelated topics at the same time. :)
