24 Percent of Gen Yers Read Blogs

Charlene Li of Forrester again has reported another demographic data on blog readers, generally about Internet consumption among Gen Yers — young adults aged 18-26.

Here’s what the short executive summary says:

Gen Yers — 18- to 26-year-olds who came of age with broadband, cell phones, and iPods, among other things — stand apart from older generations because of their hands-on approach to the Web. Marketers trying to anticipate future consumer trends should tune in to Gen Yers. As these do-it-yourselfers become a primary consuming audience, they will carry with them their cross-channel shopping enthusiasm, active blog usage, and reliance on the information-scouring powers of Google.

Some interesting highlights about the demographic groups by age:

  • 24 percent of Gen Yers read blogs.
  • 12 percent of Gen Xers (age 27-40) read blogs — which is about half out those Gen Yers.
  • Only 7 percent of Young Boomers (age 41-50) read blogs — Gen Yers are three times more likely to consume blogs.

This demonstrates the necessity to monitoring the blogosphere about what your audience reads, especially if you are targeting Gen Yers.

Charlene gives a very good tip to marketing with blogs. She advices that marketers should be sincere — not having a blog just to have one. Tapping into the power of blogs is wise but beware as Gen Yers — and I believe also every blog readers — can sniff insincerity out in a nanosecond.

My comment: It’s true. Marketing with blogs is about building relationship and establishing a healthier environment around your business. Selling too hard will turn readers off, which in turn could jeopardize your brand and credibility.
